Delbert D. Stevens, 86, of LaPorte, Indiana, passed away on Monday December 6, 2010 at Golden Living Center Fountainview in LaPorte, IN. He was born October 8, 1924 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Leroy D. Stevens and Estella L. (Dunham) Stevens. Delbert was a life-long resident of LaPorte. Delbert had been a member of the First Christian Church and First United Methodist Church, he sang in the choir for both churches. He was a past member of the Mental Health Association, and was involved with the LaPorte Little Theater. Delbert worked at Allis Chalmers as an engineer. He then went back to college, receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in math and receiving his Master's Degree in education from Purdue University. Delbert was a teacher for many years at the Hammond School System, retiring in 1990. After retiring he was a part-time instructor at Purdue North Central and a substitute teacher for the LaPorte, Michigan City, and Westville School Systems. On August 12, 1963, in Rochester, IN, he married Virginia Rose Stevens who survives. He is also survived by his sister, Roberta Barlag of Valparaiso, IN; and one nephew Scott Barlag of Valparaiso, IN. Delbert was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, Ind. where the family will receive friends Thursday, December 9, 2010 from 10:00 am, until time of service. Services will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., Thursday December 9, 2010 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Carl Rose, officiating. Interment will follow at the Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the LaPorte Co. Animal Shelter 2855 W. Ind. 2 LaPorte, IN 46350.
