Hinsdale - Dennis (Denny) Ronald King of Hinsdale, New Hampshire, died in his home on September 19, 2011, at the age of 67 years with family by his side. Born on January 30th, 1944 in Westminster, VT, to Ronald and Martha (Chowanec) King, he was the 9th of fourteen children. His early years were spent in Putney, VT where he attended Putney Central School and later in Brattleboro, VT at Brattleboro Union High School. On April 25th, 1964, he married JoAnne (Smart) at the Federated Church in Putney. They had two children; Dennis (Butch) D. (who died at the age of 30yrs in 1995) and Peter S. who now lives in Walpole, NH with his wife Kim (Miller) and their three children, Zachary, Emma and Siera. Dennis owned and operated King Plumbing and Heating for nearly forty years and became a licensed Master Plumber in both NH and VT. Dennis always attributed his success in his plumbing business to Les Wyse of Dummerston, VT. Les offered him a job when Dennis was 26 yrs working at the American Optical plant in Brattleboro. That job led to training on the job and schooling to become a licensed plumber. Les has remained a good friend through the years and was thought of (by both Dennis and his wife) as their "guardian angel", because of his patience and diligence while Dennis learned his trade. Dennis began his own business in 1972 but never forgot who introduced him to the trade he mastered so well. Dennis also had a reputation for being able to restore 1960s and 1970s Chevrolets to show condition. His projects were often the focus of young people who dreamed of someday having a fully restored Chevy Camaro, Chevelle Malibu or Chevy Nova. His love of cars spilled over into his love of Chevy pick-up trucks, which were completely restored, as were the cars, frame-up. He and his brother Randy were usually together working on new projects and making certain everything, from the trunk, to the motor, to the primer, to the paint, and interior were perfectly recreated. The brothers attended many car shows together, both winning many trophies and firmly establishing themselves as skilled restorers of classic American cars. They always showed each other the utmost respect and were proud of each other's work restoring many vehicles to show condition. Dennis' legacy lives on with the family-owned 1971 Chevelle parked in the King's garage. Over the years, Dennis and his wife, with the help of other family members, built three houses in Hinsdale for their own use. When a piece of land came available, their new ideas led them to a new home. Their last venture was the creation of "Eden Trail" in Hinsdale where they built, on two separate lots, a house and a very large garage (to accommodate Dennis' "toys"). In the summer of 2003, while working on the first "Eden Trail" house, Dennis started to have issues with his health, which worsened after he began clearing the second lot and putting in a modular home. Three years after settling into their home at 42 Eden Trail, Dennis was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and told he only had 2 years to live. He and his wife made the most of each day after the diagnosis and felt blessed to have been given the time they had together. He remained concerned for his wife and family right to the end, wanting only the best for them all. Dennis leaves behind his wife of 47 years, JoAnne King; his son, Peter King and his wife Kim of Walpole, NH; his grandchildren who called him "Poppa," Tyler King of Guilford, VT and Zachary, Emma, and Siera King of Walpole, NH; his sisters Fran Brochu of Manchester, CT, Clarice Short and her husband Howard of Dummerston, VT, Norma Ives of S. Windsor, CT, Sheila Lawrence and her husband Bernie of Dummerston, VT, Dolores Sylvester and her husband Reg of Dummerston, VT and Cheryl Aplin and her husband Ed of Brattleboro, VT; and his brothers Alton King of Putney, VT, Fred King and his wife Edie of Dummerston, VT and Randy King and his wife Dianna of Vernon, VT. He also leaves behind many, many nieces, nephews and cousins as well as his little buddy, Molly, who loved him dearly. He is predeceased by his son, Dennis R. King of Burlington, VT and his siblings Ray King Sr. of Drewsville, NH, Joyce Keeler of Putney, VT, Reginald King of Greenfield, MA and Darlene Hutchins of Dummerston, VT. A Memorial Service in celebration of his life will be celebrated Friday at 10:00 A.M. at First Congregational Church on Western Avenue with Rev. Joseph Amico, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Thursday from 6-8 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dennis' name may be made to Visiting Nurses and Hospice of VT and NH, 1 Hospital Court, Bellows Falls, VT 05101, (802) 463-4671.
