Devereaux J. Claiborne

Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Devereaux J. Claiborne (Clay) of Oxnard peacefully passed away at his home, on January 26, 2011

Devereaux was born January 2, 1919 in Olney, Texas and was raised in Mineral Wells, Texas. He was a resident of Ventura County for more than 58 years.

Devereaux was a World War II and Korean War veteran, having served in the United States Navy, and retiring after 20 years of service. During World War II he participated in the Asiatic Pacific Theater battles under Admiral Bull Halsey in the 3rd Fleet, and Admiral Mark Mitcher in the Task Force 58.1. He also served in the Korean War Task Force 77 Air Group Two under Admiral Soucek. In addition, he retired after 20 years of working for ITT (Federal Electric Corporation) at Vandenberg Air Force Base on the Apollo Project.

Devereaux Claiborne is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Constance M. Claiborne, daughters Constance J. Claiborne, Deirdra J. Claiborne and spouse Noren Schmitt, and his five dearest grandchildren Jared, Jessica and Jordan Dietch, and Christa and Nicole Schmitt; also his wonderful brother-in-law Tom and sister-in-law Pat Doler and his nephews Mitch and Derek, and Tommy (in heaven), and brother-in-law Ken and sister-in-law Lenore Doler. We all love him deeply and we will miss him greatly. “Don’t take any wooden nickels when you get to heaven, Gramps”.
Visitation for Devereaux will be held from 9 – 11:00 a.m. and then followed by
A funeral service at 11 am on Wednesday, 2/2/2011, at Santa Clara Mortuary, 2370 North H Street, Oxnard, (805) 485-5757. Interment will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery with an Honor Guard from the United States Navy.

Assisting the family is Santa Clara Mortuary. Devereaux left this earth with a legacy of great love for his family and friends, and will live forever in our hearts.
