Brattleboro- Donald Alton,"Don" Cushman, 90, a former resident of Garfield Drive died Tuesday afternoon November 22, 2011 at the Thompson House. Mr. Cushman was born in Vernon on October 23, 1921 the son of Walter and Dora (Copeland) Cushman. He was raised and educated in Vernon where he attended public schools. A proud veteran of the World War II era, he served his country in the U.S. Army. Mr. Cushman had worked as a machinist employed at the former Robert Shaw Company in Hinsdale and for several other area machine shops. He was also an accomplished musician who for several years had his own band in addition to playing with several other area groups. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints in Brattleboro and was a former member of the American Legion, Brattleboro Post #5. Besides his love for music, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and tinkering on his truck. He could fix or repair just about anything and was known as a "jack of all trades." He was married to Amy C. Plume. The marriage ended in divorce. Survivors include one son, Alton "Benny" Cushman of Brattleboro and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one brother, Howard Cushman and a sister Geneva Church. Graveside committal services with full military honors will be conducted on Friday at 11:00 A.M. in Tyler Cemetery in Vernon. There are no calling hours at the funeral home.
