Donald C. Petrie, 91, died Sunday after an illness. His wife of 51 years June M. (Moffitt) Petrie, passed in 1996. He leaves behind his three children: Brooke Sullivan and her husband, John, of Douglas; Christopher Petrie and his wife, Jane, of Grafton; and Laurel Davis and her husband, Randy, of Grafton; 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, May 4, 1920 the son of the late Charles and Gladys Petrie. A proud veteran, Don served his country as a member of the US Navy's Tin Can Sailors as a Fire Controlman, Second Class, serving aboard the USS Hazelwood in the Pacific during WWII and survived a kamikaze hit to his ship. Don worked as a commercial paper salesman for Butler Dearden in Worcester for over 25 years, retiring in 1986. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a fixture on the streets of Grafton, seen walking almost daily along North Street. When asked, "How ya doing…," his response was always, "Better than nuttin'."
