JANESVILLE--- Donald J. Eckert, age 74, of Janesville, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at his home with his family by his side. He was born in Janesville on Jan. 14, 1935, the son of Charles "Chick" and Esther (Johnson) Eckert. Don was a top wrestler in high school and a member of the first team in Janesville. Reading the Bible as a teen led to studies and 6 years teaching in Beloit. Music was always a part of his life and shortly after his marriage to Mary L. Ardelt on Aug. 4, 1956, in Whitewater, he wrote a song titled, "I'm floating on a Cloud" for his beloved Mary. He was employed at General Motors for a few years, then as a Police Officer for the City of Janesville for 23 years, and 10 years in the field of Drug and Alcohol treatment. Don was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. His term as President of the Blackhawk Golden K Kiwanis Club was important to his personal growth. He designed and maintained the club's website and was later editor of the Club Newsletter, receiving the prestigious Hixon Award. Don loved to travel with Mary and alone. They enjoyed cruises and trips to the Island of Guam. At the end of one trip he was called into the Governor's office to receive "the Ancient Order of the Chamorro" for his promotion of Guam wherever he traveled. He spent many silent retreats at the "White House" in St. Louis and at the Jesuit Retreat House in Oshkosh. Heart and lung disease and prostate cancer slowed him down, but could not stop his enthusiasm for life. He is survived by his wife, Mary; 8 children: Don (Tessie) Eckert Jr. of Guam, Dick (Mary) Eckert of Green Bay, Bill (Mary) Eckert, Tom (Amy) Eckert, Ann Bennett, Mary (Jim "Boz") Bosben all of Janesville, Theresa (Eric) Guelker of Sun Prairie, Mike (Amy) Eckert of Milton; 22 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; a brother, Galen (Patricia) Eckert of Pittsburgh, PA; a sister, DeeAnn (John) Martin of Canton, MI; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant child, Francs; and son-in-law, Rusty Bennett. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH with Rev. Stephen J. Umhoefer, Rev. Randy Timmerman, Rev. William Nolan, and Rev. Tony Clark S.V.D. concelebrating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME where a scripture service will take place at 7:00 p.m. Fr. Dave Timmerman will officiate. Memorials may be made to Pro-Life Wisconsin or ECHO. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Robert Cook and Dr. Sanford Carimi and to the nurses and staff of Mercy Assisted Care Hospice, especially Pam Koker for the loving care given to Don. Don met Mary on Dec. 7, 1953 at 9:05 p.m. For over 50 years she was 2nd in his life; Jesus was first.
