He was born in Rock Island in 1929 to the late Ralph and Betty Heming. Don graduated from Rock Island High School, and then attended the University of Illinois where he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois – Champaign. He served in the U.S. Army working in Intelligence from 1953-1955 in Arlington, VA. He worked as an engineer at Alcoa for seven years. He subsequently graduated from medical school at the University of Mexico in 1965. After attending a year of internship in Stamford, CT and residency in Phoenix, AZ, he began practicing medicine as an obstetrician/gynecologist in Davenport. He felt blessed to pursue his passion for OB-Gyn for twenty-two years.
He married Mary Joan Hofmann in January, 1960. They were joyfully married for half a century. His wife and family were the center of his life, as was his compassion and generosity to others. He served as president of the Board of Big Brothers/Big Sisters for many years. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Parish in Bettendorf.
Don loved golf, tennis, skiing, gardening and travel; always with family and friends. He had an infectious sense of humor and an engaging personality and loved sharing stories surrounded by those he loved. The greatest gifts he gave his family were his positive attitude, work ethic, and continual thankfulness for all of his blessings. He always felt blessed to have chosen a profession he was passionate about and to have his friends and family around him to celebrate life. His zest for life will be greatly missed.
Dr. Heming is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Heming and his five children; Scott (Lisa) Heming of Granger, IN: Chris (Jon) Eifert of Grafton, WI; John Anderson of Davenport; Deb (Jeff) Ralston of Neenah, WI and Lisa (Steve) Morris of Ann Arbor, MI. He is also survived by his five grandchildren Nick, Emily, Sarah, Anna and Thomas and his two sisters, Shirley Forslund and Dolores Bennett Krosch, who both reside in Arizona. He is also survived by his great friends and in-laws; Ron (Tilis) Hofmann, Mike Hofmann, Bill (Eda) Hofmann and numerous nieces and nephews.
We give special thanks to the Kahl Home, and for the compassionate caregivers for their gracious and loving care of Don during his final weeks with us.
