Donald James (D.J.) Lister died at Mercy Regional Medical Center on Feb. 8, 2009. He was 50.

D.J. was born to Hildo and Rosalie Lister on June 12, 1958, in Durango. He graduated from Durango High School and later enlisted in the United States Army, doing two tours of duty for a total of 13 years. He served as military police while stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. After receiving an honorable discharge he lived in Atlanta, Ga., and worked as a surveyor. He then moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where he received an associate's degree. He was a certified EMT in Arizona and Colorado. D.J. was pursuing a bachelor's degree at the time of his death.

His family said D.J. was a true student of life; he enjoyed learning constantly. He was a loving son, brother, and uncle.

At the request of D.J. there will be no funeral service.
