Age 80, died on Thursday, February 2, 2012. He was born in West Reading, PA. on April 29, 1931 to Robert and Edith Fisher. He is survived by his wife Kay and stepson, Steve Huisenfeldt of Albuquerque. He attended high school in Middletown, PA. Following high school he accepted a Congressional appointment to the United States Naval Academy, where he continued his successful pursuit of academics and athletics. Upon graduation in 1953 Don was commissioned in the United States Air Force and stationed in Europe flying the F-86 fighter aircraft. After his military commitment was completed he attended the University of Illinois and in 1959 received a Master of Science Degree in Engineering Physics. He moved to Albuquerque and began a lifetime career here in nuclear weapons design and development, in1968 he migrated to the Naval Weapons Evaluation Facility as a nuclear safety analyst of submarine-launched weapons. His previous flight experience was significant in his being requested to enroll in the U.S. Naval Test Pilot, Patuxent River, MD. Which he did in 1972 at the age of 41, and received a Certificate of Completion in Test Project Engineering. After returning to Albuquerque in 1973 he was named as the Navy representative to the Project Officers Group composed of DOD, DOE and civilian contractor personnel whose task was to design and develop the warhead for the Navy's Tomahawk Missile. In 1987 he was offered the position which he accepted of Lead Project Officer for all Air Force nuclear bombs undergoing modification or being developed. He retired in 1993 as Chief of the Air Force's Nuclear Weapons Division. Don liked to travel, watch sports events, go to Broadway shows and play bridge. He also said that when his time came he certainly did not wish to be mourned or eulogized: but hoped his family and friends would celebrate his life by putting on a George Jones or Marty Robbins CD and drinking a toast in his memory. In honor of Don's specific request, cremation as taken place and there will be no services. Any donations please send to the Alzheimer's Association, 9500 Montgomery NE, Suite 121, Albuquerque, NM 87111. (505) 823-9400
