Donald Raymond Markham passed away November 3rd, 2011 at the age of 64 after a valiant fight with cancer. Donald was born in Portland, OR the youngest of two sons of Helen Markham (Halderman) and Floyd Markham. He attended Beaumont Grade School and graduated from Grant High School. Don was passionate about baseball and Oregon State University athletics, inheriting the love of sports from his parents. Upon graduating from Grant High School he joined the U.S. Navy in August 1965. Donald fought in the Sa Ky River Battle aboard the USS Wilhoite DER 397 on the evening of July 15, 1967 which was his last night in Vietnam. He was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (2) and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Donald pursued his love of reading and interest in the social sciences and humanities at Portland State University where he obtained a Bachelor's degree with a double major in Political Science and Chinese History with a minor in Philosophy. As a student at Portland State University, he met and married Jeanette Hamilton, and pursued graduate studies in History and participated in the political unrest of the time. Early in his career he pursued his interest in art restoration, repair or rare books, and sales of antiques. Along with his father, he co-owned Creative Photography and Picture Framing in Portland. Upon moving to Cannon Beach with his second wife, Sandy Mako, he opened Yesterday's Paper, a small gallery with an established reputation for Parrish and Icart prints. Later in life Donald trained as a brilliant paralegal and became a helpful force to those who needed legal advice. He had a kind heart and was able to help many who found themselves in difficult circumstances. Upon retirement, Donald moved to Moro, OR in a serene and peaceful lifestyle that provided him the time to pursue his love of gardening, reading, and enjoying his Hamm radios. However, there was no greater enjoyment for Don than his relationships and conversations with his beloved friends and family. Donald is survived by his older brother, Terry Markham (Fort Lauderdale) and twin daughters Tracy Ostrem (Bellevue) and Julie Erickson (Hockinson); son Aaron Markham (Vancouver), neice Kari Murphy and four adoring grandchild and three grandnieces who all affectionately called him "Poppa Don". A memorial service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on Monday, November 14th at 3:00 p.m.
