Donald Vernon Sunde the son of Andrew and Bergliot (Handeland) Sunde was born December 26, 1922 in Estherville, Iowa and departed this life on Monday, March 23, 2009 at Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville, Iowa at the age of 86.

He received his education in Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School in 1940. He then attended Estherville Junior College and Iowa State University. While in High School Don worked at the Estherville Municipal Airport. He started flying when he was 14 and obtained his commercial flying license when he was 18 years old. In 1943 Don entered the United States Army Air Corp. serving during World War II as 2nd lieutenant. Don was a flight instructor for the P-51 fighter planes and also attended Photo Reconnaissance School where he learned to strip maps and spot pictures to be used for invasion purposes.

On September 3, 1946 he was united in marriage to Ruth Kettleson at the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville. The couple made their home in Estherville where Don was employed with Iowa Trust & Savings Bank. Don worked in all of the operating departments at the bank and was later Senior Vice-President. He also worked several years for the Moore Construction Company in Estherville. For hobbies, Don enjoyed oil painting, wood carving and carpentry work. Don was known as the "Fix-It Man".

He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as Church Elder, usher, Sunday School teacher, T.V. control operator, delivered Meals on Wheels and was a volunteer church carpenter. Don also served on the Estherville Municipal Airport Board, Estherville Rotary Club and was a Boy Scout Leader. He was a member of the American Legion 91 in Estherville.

Left to cherish Don's memory are his wife, Ruth of Estherville; son, Richard G. Sunde and his wife, Janet (Myers) of Vermillion, South Dakota; two grandchildren, Patrick Sunde and Paul Sunde and his wife, Anita; two great grandchildren, Jackson Sunde and Macallister Sunde; sister, Betty Moore and her husband, Dale of Estherville; brother-in-law, Roger Kettleson and his wife, Audrey of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister-in-law, Donna Braband of Cherokee, Iowa and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He has been preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Wilbur and Hans and step-mother, Albertine.
