Doris A. Girouard, of Brewster, MA., died September 2, 2016. She was 96 years old.
Born August 3, 1920 in Grove City, Pennsylvania, one of six children, she was the daughter of the late Grover and Vera Waldo Covert. Doris was raised and educated in Pennsylvania but moved to Worcester in 1939.
She married Albert T. Girouard on September 20, 1942 in San Francisco, CA., while Albert was serving in the U.S. Army. They lived many years in Worcester, and Northboro, MA., while Albert worked as a sales executive for Thomas Smith Company. Doris worked as a retail manager for Estee Lauder in the Jordan Marsh store, Worcester for several years. She and Albert retired in 1982 to Titusville, FL before moving to Brewster, MA six years later.
Doris is survived by her children, Patricia A. Girouard of Shrewsbury, Cynthia L. Manganello of Dennis, Randall A. Girouard of Brewster, Brian Girouard and wife Rosaria of Gloversville, NY; a sister Shirley Patch and husband James of Holden, MA; a brother Robert G. Covert of Ohio. She leaves her grandchildren Ally Girouard of NY, Alec Girouard of CA., Jessica Girouard of Malden, MA., and Andrea Orta and husband Joseph of NY; her great-grandsons, Joey and Andrew Orta of NY, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 72 years, Albert, who died in 2015; her sisters Alice Graham of PA., Geraldine Bruinsma of Holden, MA., and Gladys Bruinsma of Worcester, MA., and PA.
Doris was a passionate Red Sox Fan and cherished her beloved Ted Williams and "YAZ". She also followed the Boston Celtics since the 1950's and loved watching natives Bob Cousy and Tommy Heinsohn. She also loved poetry and reading books, especially Ogden Nash writings and Louis L'Amour books.
She was a wonderful cook, loved music and dancing. She liked to sing along with her favorite singers F. Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Ella Fitzgerald. Often at family gatherings, her husband would break out his guitar and they would sing a few classic standards that they both loved. Doris was a member of Wesley Methodist Church for many years while in Worcester, and loved being involved in various activities and social events at the church. Other passions were tending to her gardens, playing dominoes, Bingo, and especially loved getting the children and grandchildren together for hilarious board and card games, ice cream and a nice hot cup of coffee with Al at Skaket Beach. She loved being with her family.
Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Doris's life for a calling hour and service on Saturday, September 24th at 2:30 p.m. at Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors - The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury, MA. Burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA will be private.
