DORIS JEAN SHOCKEY

FAYETTEVILLE – Mrs. Doris Jean Paris Shockey of Fayetteville, WV, died on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sanford, Florida, she was the daughter of Scottish immigrants, the late Peter and Jean Ann Milne Paris. At an early age, she and her family moved to Fayette County.
Mrs. Shockey received her education at Fayetteville High School, Roanoke Business College, Marshall University, and West Virginia University. For forty-four years she worked in the educational field, first as an elementary school teacher and the last twenty years as a specialist/supervisor for the Fayette County Board of Education.
In 1997, she was honored at the Greenbrier as one of seven outstanding Reading/Language Arts supervisors in West Virginia. She was a trainer of trainers for the drug program, "Here's Looking at You, 2000" and "Writing to Read."
She was a member of Fayette County Retired School Employees, the Red Hat Society, the Angel Group, Fayette County Study Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Outstanding Women Educators, Fayetteville Presbyterian Church, and the Ladies Circle. Known for her inspirational devotions, she often was asked to speak at several of these civic organizations.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Dennis Eye, and brother-in-law, James Arden Gravely.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Bonnie Hill and husband, Howard, and Jacqueline Eye, both of Teays Valley; son, David Shockey of Oak Hill; sister, Catherine Gravely of Oak Hill; her granddaughters, Andrea Thornton of Teays Valley and Katherine Eye of Huntington.
Funeral services will be at 11 AM, Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at the Fayetteville Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville, with Rev. Greg Stone officiating and Pastor Richard Allen assisting. Burial will follow at Highlawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM, Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville. A ceremony will be held by the Delta Kappa Gamma Society at 7:45 PM.
