Dorothy Louise Martin Coffman passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, January 25, 2011. She was born June 21, 1916, in Thomasville, York County, PA to Joseph Martin and Elizabeth Julius Martin. She graduated from Dover High School in 1933. In 1934, she entered the School of Nursing at the York Hospital, York, PA. During World War II, she voluntarily enrolled herself in the Auxiliary Military Police as a Security Guard with the U.S. Army at the Ordinance Plant in York, PA. In 1945, she was one of the first female representatives to work for the John Hancock Life Insurance Company. In 1961, she was employed at Norfolk General Hospital in the Newborn Nursery Department and later was certified as an EKG Technician, and was promoted to Supervisor of that department until she retired in 1982. She was a member of the American Business Women Association for 25 years. A member of the Women of the Moose, Lodge #464, Norfolk, VA and a member of the Chesapeake Avenue United Methodist Church, Chesapeake, VA. She is survived by four children who loved her dearly, Barbara Joy Spencer of Chesapeake, VA, Linda Dee Kirby of Norfolk, VA, Kay King-Brown and husband Richard Brown of Virginia Beach, VA and Blair L. Coffman, Sr. of Portsmouth, VA; six grandchildren, Tonia Coffman of Virginia Beach, VA, Bryan Coffman of Portsmouth, VA, Paul Michael Coffman of Rome, Italy, Brian O'Donnell of Skokie, IL, and Eric Fletcher of Boston, MA; and a predeceased grandson, Blair Coffman, Jr. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 30, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. with a visitation one hour prior to services at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel by the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
