COLUMBIA - Dorothy Elvington McCarter, 93, widow of James Wylie McCarter, died Sunday, December 25, 2011 at Agape Kathwood Assisted Living after a short illness.
Born in Marion County, she was the daughter of the late John E and Annie Thompson Elvington. She graduated from Nichols High School and Winthrop College. Employed in law enforcement, she retired from the Probation and Parole Board with 39 years of service. A longtime member of First Baptist Church, Columbia, she joined the church in 1945. She was a member of Bay Blossom Garden Club, Columbia Metro Lioness Club and was President of the Columbia Drove of Benevolent Patriotic Order of the Does in 1961.
Surviving are her daughter, Sandra Long and her husband, John, of Columbia; grandchildren, James Kirkpatrick Long and his wife, Lori, of Pascagoula, Miss., Tiffiney L. Potter and her husband, Wesley, of Columbia; four great-grandchildren, Alison and Sam Long of Pascagoula, Warren and Riley Grace Potter of Columbia; a sister, Carolyn Webb of Wilmington, N.C.; and other nieces and a nephew. She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, James Wylie McCarter and a daughter, Cathy McCarter Fagan.
Graveside service for Mrs. McCarter will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2011 in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Officiating will be the Rev. Dennis B. Banks. The family will receive friends following the graveside service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Senior Ministries, 1306 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC 29201.
