Dorothy Pesce Muszynski died peacefully on November 16, 2011 in Winter Park, surrounded by her children. Dorothy was born December 20, 1924 in New York City, the proud daughter of Italian immigrants Carolina Roseo and Pietro Pesce. Dot, as she was known to family and friends, was one of 7 children. She attended Sidney High School in Sidney, NY and went on to nursing school in Binghamton, NY.
Upon graduation, she moved back to New York City with her twin sister Pauline, working at The Jewish Hospital of Brooklyn in Crown Heights. They lived together at the hospital, due to housing shortages caused by WWII, later moving to the former Coast Guard Barracks on Chambers Street in downtown Manhattan, and working at a hospital in Midtown.
In 1949, Dot moved to Orlando, FL with her son, Raymond. At The Air Base Grill in Orlando, she met the restaurant's owner John Muszynski. After coyly declining several times, John wore her down and she agreed to a date. They were married on October 30, 1952 in Baltimore, MD. Together they raised 5 wonderful children.
Dot was a tireless worker and a devoted mother, balancing caring for her children while working full-time as a nurse, even when her husband John had to spend the summers abroad, working as a radio officer on merchant ships. She had a nursing career that spanned 45 years at many Orlando hospitals, working for over 20 years as a nurse and administrator at Orange Memorial Hospital, as well as a Public Health Nurse for Orange County. Towards the end of her career, she worked to develop and implement national standards of review for the medical profession.
In the mid-1980s, she and John retired to St. Augustine, FL, enjoying exercising on the beach and dancing to her favorite Big Band tunes at the local Elks Club and the VFW. In her retirement, she also developed a passion for travel, travelling throughout the US and visiting her granddaughter Nikki Moore in Argentina.
Dorothy is survived by her son Raymond Palermo and his wife Lucia, her daughter Jonette Sawyer and her husband Paul, daughter Maria Smith and her husband Michael, daughter Lisa DuPont and her husband Allen, and daughter Claire Bryson and her husband John, as well as her three granddaughters, nine grandsons, and two great-grandchildren. Dorothy is also survived by her sister Mary Stover of Maitland and her brother Dr. Louis Pesce of Longwood, as well as eight nieces and one nephew. Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, John, their infant daughter Marcie, her sister Pauline, and her brothers, Frank, Joseph and Anthony.
