Mrs. Dorothy Rhett Taylor, age 92, Dot, as she was commonly referred to was born Dorothy Gaillard on September 8, 1919 in Charleston, South Carolina. She was the daughter of James Gaillard and Eliose Rhett. She spent her early childhood on Congress Street and at the age of seventeen she moved to Maryville, west of Ashley. While on Congress Street she became affiliated with Morris Brown AME Church and participated in many church activities including Sunday school. She graduated from Burke High School in 1939 and thereafter moved to Paterson, NJ where she met and married the late Henry Douglas Taylor Jr, from that union two sons were born, Henry Douglas Taylor III (Patricia) and Gregory Lewis Taylor (Charlene). Having worked all of her life, she also attended Paterson State Teachers College and eventually graduated in 1968 from Rutgers University with a Bachelor degree. She eventually concluded a successful working career with the State of New Jersey's Division of Youth and Family Services in 1986. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Pauline Wise and Ruby Gilliard and her brother, Thaddeus "Buster" Rhett. She departed this earthly realm on Friday, December 2, 2011 at roughly 3:30 p.m. She lived a truly remarkable life. Dorothy is also survived by two sisters, Julia Richardson and Lucille Seabrooks; her sister-in-law, Bessie F. Taylor; her daughter, Asli Amin; as well as a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dearest friend, Sandra Tutt- Young.
