Memorial service for Dorothy Sample Rummans, 89, will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 15, 2012, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be private at Elmwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Rummans died Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Born on January 19, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Floride Harden Sample. She grew up in the Melrose Heights/Shandon area of Columbia and graduated from Columbia High School. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a M.A. degree in Education beginning a lifelong career in education. During WWII, Dot taught several combined grade classes at Dentsville School while living with her parents in the Arcadia Lakes section of Columbia. Her late husband, Mack Rummans, was serving in India during this time. Her educational career spanned over 40 years and ranged from co-founding one of the first pre-school programs in Columbia at North Trenholm Baptist Church to later assuming the Directorship of the Orthopaedic School in Columbia. Most of her students will remember her during the many years she taught at Satchel Ford Road Elementary in Richland One School District. Dot was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, honorary sorority for women educators. She was also an active volunteer with several service organizations. She grew up in Shandon Baptist Church and later, was an active member of North Trenholm Baptist Church. Dot loved nature and bird watching, and was an avid gardener and bridge player. Some of her favorite times were spent fishing on Lake Arcadia with her son, Fred.
Dot is survived by her daughter, Laura Lou Rummans of Columbia; son, Fred McLewis Rummans (Julia) of Hilton Head Island; grandchildren, Chase Alexander Rummans, Angela Logan Rummans, both of Hilton Head Island; nieces, Carol Sample of Columbia, Julie Sample Petroff (Walker)of St. Helena Island; grandniece, Cary Kreps of Columbia; grandnephew, Allen Petroff (Lolly) of West Columbia; and great-grandnephews, Charlie and George Petroff. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband and brothers, Fred Sample, Jr. and William Harden Sample.
