DOROTHY TIETZ POWELL March 13, 1925 – August 16, 2011 Dorothy Tietz Powell, 86, died on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Interment will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, August 18, at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 17, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. She was born on March 13, 1925, in Waco, Texas. Dorothy was one of five sisters who grew up during the hard times of the Great Depression era. She attended public schools in Tokio and West, where she excelled in basketball. She met the love of her life, Barron Ramsey Powell, at Citizens National Bank where he worked. They were married in 1947 and had two children, Eva and Philip. Ramsey Powell died in 1991 after a long career at Citizens National Bank. Over four hundred people attended his funeral. Dorothy and Ramsey were devoted to Austin Avenue United Methodist Church, where they were both very active for many years. They belonged to the Audubon Society and were active "birders". Dorothy was an excellent gardener, who could revive even the most emaciated plant. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Eva Frances Vokes and husband, Barry; son, Philip Ramsey Powell and wife, Janet; grandchildren, Stuart Vokes and wife, Amy, Deanna Vokes, Amanda Whitley and husband, "W", and Brandon Powell; great grandchildren, Madelyn Whitley, Evelyn Whitley and Gwyneth Vokes; and sisters, Mildred Sanderson and husband, Phil, Ruby Welch and Frances Barber. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Brandi, Jessica, Nancy and the staff of Bluebonnet Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to Dorothy in her final months. Dorothy was always the one everyone in the family turned to when they were sick and needed a helping hand. She always "came running" when called upon. Eva and Barry Vokes wish it to be known that they considered it an honor to take care of Dorothy in their home for three years. A bright light has been extinguished but will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Austin Avenue United Methodist Church Choir Fund. The family invites you to leave a message or memory in our "Memorial Guestbook" at www.WilkirsonHatchBailey.com. Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey
