Dorothye Hickman Simmerman, a former long time resident of Pascagoula, Mississippi and more recently of Mobile, Alabama, peacefully passed this life after eighty-six years on April 20, 2011, while surrounded by family and friends.
She was born as the tenth of eleven children to John and Clara May Hickman on March 16, 1925 in Bay, Arkansas. Following her graduation from Brinkley High School in Brinkley, Arkansas, she moved to Memphis, Tennessee, eventually becoming a hostess with Southern Railway in Washington, D.C. She later met and married George Simmerman, and they moved to Pascagoula in 1954.
After moving to Pascagoula, Dottye became a legal secretary for her husband (a local attorney who died in 1979), and later a corporate secretary for PAVCO Industries. Dottye was an active church member of First Presbyterian Church and was recognized as a long serving member of the Presbyterian Women. She was also a charter member of the Zonta Club of Pascagoula, and was named to Who's Who Among Women in America's Businesses.
Following Hurricane Katrina, she moved to Mobile and became an active member of Christ United Methodist Church. She so enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheri Mullin and son-in-law, Leo, her son, George Simmerman and daughter-in-law, Valerie, her grandchildren, Laurin Tew (Marshall), Lesley Hines (Worth), Meredith Simmerman, Sydney Simmerman and Laithan Simmerman, and great granddaughter, Mary Bennett Hines, all of Mobile, and her brothers Keith Hickman of Parkin, Arkansas and Beryl Hickman of Ocala, Florida.
A combined visitation and memorial funeral service will be held beginning at 10 AM this Saturday, April 23rd, at First Presbyterian Church in Pascagoula.
A graveside service will follow at Pine Crest West Cemetery on Snow Road in Mobile. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider donations in her memory to First Presbyterian Church in Pascagoula or Christ United Methodist Church in Mobile.
