E. Cortright Phillips, age 83, the beloved husband of Ellen Hyde Phillips, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, November 27, 2010 in St. Vincent's Medical Center. Born in Bridgeport, Mr. Phillips attended Yale University's Army Program and University of Bridgeport where in 1949 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. Corty, as he was known to family and friends, started his career in 1949 as an auditor with the IRS. He then worked as an accountant with Milton H. Friedberg and Company from 1951 to 1955. Corty joined Hincks Brothers and Company as Treasurer in 1955 (Hincks was then acquired by Eastman Dillon, Union Securities). In 1965, Corty joined Citytrust Bank where he advanced through a series of positions starting with Assistant Trust Officer and culminating with Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors from 1979 to 1989. After a brief retirement from 1989 through mid-1992, Corty was named Commissioner for the State of Connecticut Commission on Hospitals and Health Care where he served until July, 1995. From that point forward, Corty continued his community service work and enjoyed retirement. Throughout his life, Corty was extremely active in professional and community service activities. He served on innumerable boards and commissions and gave of his time selflessly to the following associations: Albertus Magnus College – Trustee, American Cancer Society, American Shakespeare Theater, The Barnum Festival Society, Inc. - Member, Board of Directors, Ringmaster 1980, Boy's and Girl's Club of Bridgeport – Chairman, Bridgeport Convention and Visitors Commission – Chairman, Bridgeport Economic Development Corporation, Bridgeport Neighborhood Fund, Bridgeport Neighborhood Housing Services Corporation, Bridgeport Regional Business Council, Cardinal Shehan Center, Connecticut Audubon Society, Connecticut Community Care, Inc., Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority – Chairman, Connecticut Policy and Economic Council, Inc., Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority, Connecticut Zoological Society The Discovery Museum, Downtown Special Services District – Bridgeport – Chairman Fairfield Council, Long Wharf Theater, Fairfield University – Trustee, Greater Bridgeport Symphony, Physicians Health Services, South End Neighborhood Housing Services Corporation, St. Vincent's Special Needs Center – Member, Board of Directors, Treasurer, Stratford Board of Education – Chairman, University of Bridgeport – Life Member, Board of Associates and U.S. Baird Corporate – Member, Board of Directors. Corty is survived by his nine loving children: David C. Phillips and his wife Sharon, Dr. Janice E. Phillips and her husband Robert Robinson, Leslie Phillips Levine and her husband Arthur Levine, Elaine M. Phillips and her spouse Cynthia Kovacs, Betsy Campanelli Tartaglia and her husband James Tartaglia, James C. Phillips and his wife Valerie Phillips, Marcy Phillips Parrillo and her husband Michael Parrillo, Bryan H. Phillips and his wife Laura Phillips and Stacy L. Phillips. He is also survived by his step-sons, Jason Hyde and his wife Bridget Hyde and Kyle Hyde and his fiancé Amanda Jue. In addition to his children, Corty is survived by twenty-two grandchildren: David Jr. and his wife Sherri, Jeff, Katie, Lauren, Nicholas, Evan, Joshua, Jacob, Zachary, Jessica, Alex, Vincent, Andrew, Kaitlin, Alyssa, Jenna, Madeleine, Christian, Brady, Jordan, Adam and Evan plus two great-grandchildren Julianna and Brandon. He was pre-deceased by his late wife, Nancy Hogan Phillips and son-in-law, David Campanelli. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. directly at St. Pius X Church 834 Brookside Drive in Fairfield. Interment is private. Visitation will take place on Friday, December 3, 2010 from 3-8 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road in Fairfield Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to either the E. Cortright Phillips & Nancy Hogan Phillips Scholarship Fund, administered through The Fairfield County Community Foundation (www.fccfoundation, org) or Swim Across The Sound, St. Vincent's Medical Center (www.swimacrossthesound.org ).
