Earl J. (EJ) Philpott, 79, passed away January 3, 2012. He is survived by his wife Carol, daughter Kim Philpott of Oldsmar, Florida, son Guy Philpott of Sitka, Alaska, daughter Kely Engdahl her husband Clark and son Ian of Dana Point, California, brother Tom Philpott and his wife Chris of Toronto, Canada and brother Edgar Philpott of Toronto, Canada, sister in law Martha (Marty) Hopkins, "adopted" daughter Cashel Mack and her son Keegan, plus numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.
Earl came to Arkansas from California at the "invitation" of Fred Smith as Fred was beginning the development of Federal Express. Earl designed the first cargo doors and landing lights modifications on the Falcon Jet which was used as Fed Ex's first cargo plane. EJ later retired from Dassault Falcon Jet. He was an accomplished, complicated, multi-talented man with an unmatched zest for life. He was a dedicated, serious, fun, absolutely upbeat individual with a remarkable sense of humor who tackled his work, play and the world with a truly sunny disposition. Regardless of the stresses of the day, he always had a reply of "Couldn't be better!" when asked how he was doing. He had an immense love for his wife and family, reveled in the antics and affection of his four-legged children and was always willing to help those in need. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, especially fly fishing, golf with his wife and/or buddies at The Village and 'communing with mother nature' any time of the year under any circumstance, particularly when he could take photographs.
EJ survived the Korean War in the Canadian Navy, wild wolf packs in a village in the Northwest Territories of Canada, a small plane breaking through the ice on a seemingly frozen lake in the Artic near Baffin Island, polar bears, double pneumonia with a near death experience in Quebec and being on the last plane out of the air while flying into Pittsburgh on 9-11, but when the last call was heard, he answered.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either of his favorite charities: St. Jude's Hospital, Arkansas Children's Hospital or Wounded Warriors.
Family visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 9th, 2012 with funeral services immediately following at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Forest Hills Funeral Home, 10200 Hwy 5 North, Alexander, Ar 72002 (501)455-1067.

Dear Carol & Family
It was an honor and a privilege to know and work with Earl. He always made me feel as if I was working with him instead of for him. He always had such a positive can do attitude it couldn't help but rub off on you. A man often wonders if when he is gone from this earth if he will have left a mark on the lives of others. I have always been thankful for the years I was able to work under Earl's leadership at Falcon Jet in the 90's. He was a man who chose to find sunshine on "rainy" days, and always encouraged the people under his authority to give their very best. Praying for all of his family and friends as they walk through the this time of grief.

Carrol, May God be with you during these times. As a co-worker, and friend of Earl, the following thoughts and memories come to mind, Earl was a very devoted person, not only to his employer; but to every person that worked for him. Had he worked with Orville and Wilbur Wright on the first airplane flight, it would have flown sooner and further. Whenever a group is discussing aviation, one out of every three people either knew Earl personally, or was affected by something he caused to happen in aviation. Earl, you will be greatly missed.

Earl was a wonderful person to know, and it was a privilege to have him as a neighbor for the past 15 years. He had been many places and knew a lot about many different things, which made for many interesting conversations, often about his latest project or of his growing up in Canada. He was always willing to help out, and whenever I asked how he was, his standard reply was, "Fabulous!" It was a pleasure to know him, and Mark and I will miss him greatly.

EJ was a very great and humorous fellow who always had a smile on his face and a can do attitude. I worked, fished and golfed with him many times over thirty three years and never heard him say a bad word about anyone. He was indeed a joy to have known and will be missed by many. We have always known that we would take this road but yesterday we did not know it would be today. Rest in peace old friend!

We always enjoyed talking with Earl as he always had lots of stories to tell. He was always so happy and lots of laughs. We really enjoyed both Carol & Earl's visits to Ontario Canada and Steve really enjoyed playing golf & visiting. Earl was always positive. we enjoyed his stories. I was glad to hear that while golfing in Ontario in Sept of 2011 that he won the family trophy.

Carol:

I called Nelson Philpot, my cousin in Homer, LA last night to let him know Earl had passed away. Both of us were delighted when you and Earl made the journey to Cherry Hill, Arkansas to attend our Philpot Family Reunion in 1996. It was nice to have a couple of Newfys in our midst.

It is great to know both of you.

34 years ago this week I arrived at Falcon Jet in Little Rock. Earl was the first person I was introduced to. I knew right away he was a person I wanted to get to know better. We spent many a day duck hunting or fishing and they were always peaceful and rewarding times.
As a leader Earl was one of the few people I have known who could inspire just about anyone to always want to do thier best, someone you'd do anything for.
As I look out my office window into the "old" hanger I often recall the times Earl and I spent discussing airplanes and the mentoring he afforded me.
I miss him.

Carol and Family,

From the horse track and his "winning" formula, to building a deck, to finding that "dumaflache thingy" he set aside somewhere :), he always put a smile on my face. He will be truly missed.

If you ever wanted to meet a person that was upbeat and down to earth, then Earl was your man. If he needed assistance or information concerning a project, he had a way of asking that made it a pleasure to help. I remember all of the Walleye Weekend Wallows that we attended through the years and that's where Earl's dry wit and humor would come out. All of the years of bowling with Earl will always be remembered. His "happy go lucky" attitude and carefree spirit is what made Earl the man he was. He will always be remembered! Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family through these tough days ahead.

Only Earl the Pearl could go to the horse track with a sure way to pick the winners. Took hours and hours of preparation with this elaborate theory, many laughs and good times trying to find the one to cross the line first. Needless to say we never hit it big but certainly had many laughs while trying to figure out just the right one. He gave me his book on this system and it was passed on last year to Mr. Lucky at Falcon to try his luck now. Earl was one of the happiest people that I have ever known and could always make you feel better no matter how bad it got. CB

My prayers are with you during this time.
Earl and my Dad (David) worked together for many years and I believe that they truly helped make Dassault what it is today. Earl was a dear friend to my Dad. I remember when I was growing up I would go to work with my Dad on the weekends and Earl always seemed to be working on some special project in his office. The one I remember well was back before they built all of the new buildings when he asked me if I would like to help him hang a very large map of the world on his office wall.
