Graveside services for Edgar A. Benton, 94, of La Grange, Texas (formerly of Rosenberg) will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. Edgar was born on April 13, 1919 in Salt Gap, Texas to Lena Massie Benton and Butler Benton and he passed away on July 30, 2013 at the home of his son, Allen Benton and wife Judy Benton. Edgar was a lifelong resident of Fort Bend County until December 26, 2001 when he had heart surgery and he and Mary Delle moved to La Grange to live with Allen and Judy. Edgar graduated from Beasley High School and attended their annual reunions until a couple of years ago when he was physically unable to attend. After a brief time in college he joined the U.S. Army at the age of 19. He served his Country for three years as a Paratrooper for the 502 rd Airborne Division in the Philippines during WWII. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medals during his service. He was on furlough when the war ended and served the remainder of his enlistment in the USA. On December 22, 1946 he married the love of his life, Mary Delle Fletcher. They were married almost 60 years when he lost Mary Delle in 2006. The couple had two sons who were born and raised in Rosenberg. Edgar retired from HL&P (Houston Lighting and Power) after 37 years of service. He spent 20 years as a Volunteer Fireman for the City of Rosenberg and served as Captain of Emergency Corp. Edgar was a member of the American Legion Post 721 in Rosenberg and was a lifetime member of VFW 3903. Edgar was a Boy Scout and became a Scout Leader when his boys were growing up. He and Mary Delle were both active in Civic affairs in Rosenberg. Edgar is survived by his son and his wife, grandson, Brandon Brook Benton and wife, Irasema, great grandson, Landon Brook Benton, sister-in-law, Joyce Lynn Benton, nephew Stanley Benton and wife Beverly and many other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, youngest son, George Melvin Benton, brother, Oscar Lee Benton, infant brother Melvin Benton, his parents, and mother and father-in-law, Matilda and George Fletcher. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 2, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:30 P.M. in the Stateroom at Davis Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to; Hospice Brazos Valley, 1048 N. Jefferson St., La Grange, Tx 78945.
