Edmund C. Spelman Jr, 85, of West Orange passed away on March 18th. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Elsie, his devoted children, Le-ellen and George Doty, Lisa and Mark Molisani and Edmund and Renée Spelman and his cherished grandchildren, George, Christopher, Daniel, Elizabeth, David, William, Andrew, Michael and Christin. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Spelman, and his sisters-in-law Katie Mack and Antoinette Inguaggiato as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Known for his warmth, good humor, kindness and deep faith, Ed lived a full life. Born on April 7, 1924 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where his parents were expatriates, he weighed in at a mere three pounds as one of a set of triplets (and he later became a grandfather to triplets). He grew up in Rutherford, NJ and served in the U.S. Marine Airforce in the Marshall Islands during WWII. After the war, he graduated from Mount St. Mary's College and earned his J.D. from Fordham Law School. He practiced workmen's compensation law for many years with N.J. Manufacturers Insurance Company, but what he loved best was doing pro bono work for people in need, whether for legal advice or just a helping hand. He was predeceased by his parents, Edmund C. Spelman and Helen Mahaney Spelman and siblings Claire, Eileen, Pat, Betty, Rita and Julia. The family will be receiving visitors at Wm. A. Bradley & Son, 345 Main St., Chatham on Sunday March 21st from 2-7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Monday March 22nd at St. Joseph's Church, 44 Benvenue Ave., West Orange. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
