Edmund L. Potter
Greenville, SC
Edmund Lysle Potter, born in Greenville in 1924, the son of the late Winfield Tuthill Potter and Virginia Allen Potter, died Tuesday afternoon, November 29, 2011.
He was a 1941 graduate of Greenville High School and Severn Preparatory School during which time he was an Eagle Scout. He later served as president of the Blue Ridge Council where he received the Silver Beaver Award.
Ed attended Georgia Tech and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha order.
A Veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre.
At the time of his retirement, he was president and treasurer of Potter-Shackelford Construction Company.
He was a past president of the Piedmont Contractors Association and had served on the board of the Carolina's Branch Associated General Contractors and the South Carolina Board for Barrier Free Design.
A former director of American Federal Bank, he had served as vice president of the Chamber of Commerce and on the boards of the YMCA and the United Way and was a past chairman of the Greenville Hospital System Board of Trustees and past chairman of the Donaldson Commission.
He was formerly a member of the City of Greenville's Fireman's Pension Fund, the City Zoning Board of Adjustment and had served on the board of directors of Kanuga Conference Center.
He was a past president of the Greenville Kiwanis Club where he was a George F. Hixson Fellow, a past president of the Senior Golfers of South Carolina, a past president of the Cotillion Club and the Green Valley Country Club.
He was an active member of Christ Church, where he had served as vestryman and senior warden and had been chairman of the Endowment Corporation.
Surviving are his wife, Eugenia Jones Potter; a daughter, Alice Dillard Potter of Columbia; a son, Edmund Alexander Potter and wife, Geary of Greensboro, NC; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth and Lucia Derks, Marshall Derks and wife, Laura; step-sons, Robert E. Howard and wife, Beverly and William E. Howard and wife, Cindy of Greenville and John A. Howard and wife, Cathy of Raleigh, NC.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Dillard Potter, a daughter, Virginia Allen Potter, and his sister, Virginia Potter Crigler Beatty.
Funeral services will be at 11am, Friday at Christ Church, Episcopal with the Reverend Robert Chiles officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 8:30pm at the mortuary.
