Edna D. Guy was born April 5, 1934 in Hartsville, SC to the late Bessie Ross and Edward Emmanuel. She attended grammar school there and graduated from Butler High School. Edna later met and married Leonard Guy on May 5, 1952. She moved to Paterson, NJ in 1963, and began working at Paterson Shade Co. for a number of years, and later on Preakness Hospital.
