Edna P. Wood passed peacefully from this life on 13 January 2012 at the age of 94. She was born in Fremont Co., Riverton, WY, in a little white house which her father built. She was the second-oldest member of the Northern Arapahoe tribe. She used to ride her horse, "Dollar Bill", bareback to school, and bathed in the Ft. Washakie hot springs. In 1934, Edna graduated from Fremont County Vocational High School (Lander, WY). She attended Haskell Institute in Lawrence Kansas, graduating with a diploma from the Commercial Department. She then went to Washington D.C. to work at the B.I.A., in the Education Department, for Director Dr. Willard Beatty. The B.I.A. offices, including Edna, were transferred to Chicago during WWII. During the war, Edna enlisted in the Navy Waves, attended boot camp at Hunter College in the Bronx, and became a Seaman 1st class, working in the Information Department. She returned to the B.I.A. after the war. In 1948, she married Everett Wood, also a WWII veteran and B.I.A. employee, at the Episcopal Church across from the White House. Everett eventually became the B.I.A.'s Chief of Credit for the Navajo Nation, in Window Rock, AZ. Everett and Edna continued to enjoy living in Gallup, until they moved to Albuquerque in 2004. Edna completed a General Studies degree from the University of New Mexico in 1976. Edna is survived by four children, John, Douglas and Dana in Albuquerque and Charlene (Dolly) Delaunay in Arapahoe, WY; and three grandchildren. The family is very appreciative of the professional care that Everett and Edna received from the Albuquerque VA hospital. Friends may visit on Tuesday, January 17 from 10:30 a.m. followed by a Service at 11:00 a.m. at French - University Chapel. Although Edna loved flowers, please consider donations to the American Indian College Fund, www.collegefund.org.
