Edward E. Porter, Sr.
Greenville, SC
Edward Eugene Porter, Sr., 90, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, January 24, 2012.
Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Lee Ernest and Sudie Brewer Porter and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Porter was a member of that Greatest Generation where he honorably served during World War II in the Army Air Corps as a bombardier. Following his discharge he returned home to Greenville where he retired with 40 years service from the Greenville News. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post # 3 and the Pendleton Street Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Fortner Porter in 1991 and his son, Edward Eugene "Gene" Porter, Jr.. He is survived by his loving family, his daughters and son-in-law, Judie and David Buchanan of Easley and Mary Beth and Hugh Carroll; his daughter-in-law, Phyllis B. Porter, all of Greenville; his six grandchildren, Jennifer P. Stokes (Ryan), Julie P. Rivers (Patrick), Ashley Troutman (Elizabeth), Jessica A. Kivett (Jonathan) and Mary Catherine Horne (Joseph); and eight great-grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Porter will be Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 3:00pm in the Mausoleum chapel at Greenville Memorial Gardens with the Reverend William R. West officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at the mausoleum.
The family will be at the home of daughter and son-in-law, Mary Beth and Hugh Carroll.
In lieu of flowers memorials please be made to American Legion Post # 3, 400 N. Main Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
