Mr. Edwin E. "Eddy" Schildt, Sr., 70, of 25 N. Potomac St., Apt. 115, died at 7:10 A.M., Monday, November 28, 2011, in the Waynesboro Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past several years. Born January 11, 1941 in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late John R. Schildt and Marjorie V. (North) Hurd. Along with his mother, he was raised by his step-father, Cletus Hurd of Waynesboro. He graduated from Waynesboro High School with the class of 1958. Mr. Schildt served with the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1958-1966, where he was the recipient of numerous awards and medals including the Good Conduct Medal, Airman of the Month in March 1960, and Airman of the Year for 1960 at the Indian Springs Air Force Base at the Nevada Test Site. He and his wife, Kathy L. (Kepner) Schildt, were married on May 19, 1995 in Greencastle, PA. Following his discharge from the military, Mr. Schildt was employed for the Nevada Power Company in Las Vegas for several years. He later worked as a bricklayer and mason for various construction companies including Senate Masonary in Alexandria, VA, until a construction accident on March 12, 1995 left him disabled. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #694, Hagerstown, where he was a past trustee and Fraternal Order of the Eagles #1758, Waynesboro, where he was past president and District 9 Officer. He was also a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15, Waynesboro. Mr. Schildt enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger years and was an avid reader, especially of biographies. He enjoyed baseball, having tried out for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the L.A. Dodgers, and was an avid fan of the NY Yankees. He played softball in the Waynesboro Adult League for many years and also enjoyed football, where he was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys. In addition to his wife and step-father, he is survived by one daughter, Jodi N. Schildt of Kane, PA; two granddaughters, Kelsey M. Shoemaker and McKenzie K. Shoemaker; one sister, Doris C. Bowie of Westminster, MD; three brothers, Robert L. Schildt of Washington, D.C. and twins Dennis L. Hurd of Greencastle and Kenneth L. Hurd of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sons, Edward E. Schildt, Jr., James I. Schildt, and John W. Schildt. Services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
