Dr. Edwin Sheldon Gould died this Tuesday at his home in Kent, OH. He was 85, and had only just this summer retired from his teaching post at Kent State University, where he had taught chemistry since 1967. He was granted the position of University Professor in 1982, the Distinguished Honors Faculty Teaching Award in 1996 and the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2004.
Dr. Gould was born in Hollywood, CA on August 19th, 1926. He attended Hollywood High School and graduated from California Institute of Technology in 1946. He received his PhD from the University of California - Los Angeles in 1950. Before coming to Kent State, he worked at Polytechnic University of New York, SRI International, University of California (Berkeley) and San Francisco State University.
Throughout his career, Dr. Gould fostered 24 graduate students, and 21 post-docs. His experimental research in inorganic reaction mechanisms has resulted in 213 research articles. His two graduate-level textbooks have been translated into German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Serbo-Croatian.
In addition to his numerous accomplishments within the sciences, Dr. Gould was a talented violinist and violist, playing chamber music on a regular basis around the United States and in Kent, and attended the annual chamber music workshops in Humboldt, CA and Interlochen, MI for more than forty years. He was also a gifted poet, and published a number of chapbooks. He participated frequently in Kent's own series of monthly poetry readings.
He was married in 1952 to Marjorie McFarlin, who preceded him in death in 2003. In 2005, he married Carol Williams Brown of New York. He is survived by Carol, his sons Richard Gould-Saltman (Hon. Dianna Gould-Saltman), Kirk Gould (Yvonne Murray), his stepdaughter Laura Darby Singh (Adam Darby Singh), his grandchildren Cameron Gould-Saltman, James Gould, Elizabeth Gould, Rachel Murray, Chelsea Temple, and his great-granddaughter, Cierra Gould. He is also survived by his sister, Donna E. Gould (Amy Bauer), of New York City.
