Ed played with all takers, he encouraged others to open their minds to new music, and he played with appreciation for the opportunities we had to share meaningful experiences through great music. He is a part of the history of very special places, like Interlochen and Sleepy Hollow, where playing in a quartet or having lunch together, you knew he was there for the love of the music and potential joys of sharing it.
I join countless others from all areas of his life in extending sympathy to Ed’s family.

As I was preparing my entry, Cecilia's entry was posted. Since mine was to say virtually the same thing, I will only add that he will be missed.

I first met Ed at Sleepy Hollow where it was my pleasure to play several obscure
pieces I'd never seen nor heard of before. I soon learned that this was the expected fare when one played chamber music with Ed. It was my good fortune to repeat such sessions many times both at Sleepy Hollow and at Interlochen Music "Band" camp. It was with great relief that we met and welcomed this sweet, doting, cheerful wife, Carol, into
our hallowed circle of music hackers. We will all miss him terribly and remember him with great fondness.

On my first day ever at Interlochen in 1977, I was assigned to play the Sibelius quartet with Ed, Samuel Kurlandsky, and Marybeth Dederian. The music was Ed's choice, quite difficult, and I had never seen it before. However, Ed's enthusiasm, his fine playing, and his obvious love of it made for a very enjoyable two hours.

Ed introduced me to much of the chamber music repertoire at Interlochen when I was a neophyte to the genre. He knew it all and always was kind and gentle in these informal coaching sessions. He had a wry sense of humor that prevented any of us from taking ourselves too seriously.

I will miss his presence at chamber music gatherings.

I must have met him first in about 1979, the first year I went to Interlochen and I played with him every year after that. I attended yearly for many years, right up to 2011. He was always there waiting for me.

He was a most sharing man. He shared many lunchtime conversations with me at Interlochen and he freely shared his poetry with me there and in the mail. I always enjoyed talking and corresponding with him about musical matters, but also about many other things, medicine, politics, esthetics, poetry, and history.

Interlochen will be a greatly diminshed experience for me with Ed gone.
