Eileen (Flaherty) Savard passed away on Christmas Day 2010 at the age of 88. She was born in Baltimore Maryland July 1922 the first of two children of Edward and Edna (Callahan) Flaherty. Her brother Joseph was born when she was 10 years old and unfortunately preceded her in death in 2009. She lived in Baltimore raising her eight children until she moved to Portland in 1984 after her husband passed away. Eileen came to Portland to be with seven of her children who had migrated here over the years. Although she always missed her hometown she enjoyed living in Portland and getting to see many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren be born and grow, She always missed her daughter Rosemary who lives in Florida and regretted not being able to see more of Ro's children and grandchildren. She lived in Sellwood for the last 26 years and was a parishioner of St Agatha Catholic Church all that time. She enjoyed being an active member of the Alter Society and the Over 55 Birthday Club until recenty when she became too ill to leave her house. She appreciated the Parish sending someone to her house to give her communion. And I know she was greatly comforted by Father Nathan's visit and annointing the last week of her life. Her faith in God was an important aspect of her life and provided solace as she approached the end of this part of her journey. Eileen's stories of her childhood included riding along with her dad as he delivered bread daily to households in various neighborhoods of Baltimore. (Bread delivered daily to your house - how nice!) Another story was of hanging blackout curtains at the windows during WWII so that enemy planes who might attack the east coast would not have any targets. She was truly a child of the depression and WWII and this was reflected in her approach to misfortune and sorrow which was stoicism and a "OK, that happened now lets get on with life". Unfortunately Eileen recently had her share of sorrow. She lost three of her children in 12 months from January 2008 to January 2009. Lester, Linda, and Michael were taken from Eileen and the family too young and too soon. Eileen is survived by her children Gene, Rosemary, Richard, Ann, and Susan. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren Michael, Heather, John, Stephen, Thomas, Jason, Jennifer, and Andrea. She is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren Jessica, Michael, Kaylie, Devin, Lauren, Brooke, Lalo, and Alana. And of course all of the spouses and ex-spouses of her children that she loved. Please do not mourn Eileen's passing. She is with all of her loved ones who completed this journey before her and is surrounded by their love and the love of God.
