COLUMBIA - Memorial service for Dr. Elbert Neil Johnson Jr., 86, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 25, 2012, at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, with a private burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Dr. Johnson died Sunday, August 19, 2012. Born in Dunn, N.C., he was a son of the late Reverend Elbert and Frances Johnson. He grew up in Mt Olive, N.C. and graduated from Fair Bluff, N.C. High School in 1942. He attended Mars Hill College and graduated from Wake Forest College in 1945. He graduated Bowman Gray Medicine School in 1947 and interned at Detroit Receiving Hospital, Detroit, Mich. He served as a U.S. Army officer for two years and saw active duty in Korea-Assigned 5th Regimental Combat Team as a battalion surgeon, U.S. Army Medical Service. He served his medical residency at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga. and Roper Hospital in Charleston. After a brief private practice in Florence in the early fifties, he worked four years at the VA Hospital in Columbia. He entered private practice in internal medicine in Columbia in 1959, where he retired in 1988. He was a former Trustee at Baptist Medical Center in Columbia. After retirement, he worked with S.C. Department of Vocational Rehabilitation in the Disability Determination Division for many years.
A long time member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, he served as a deacon for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Dr. Ruth Smith Johnson of Columbia; son, Elbert Neil Johnson III and his wife, Rebecca Bridges Johnson; granddaughters, Katherine Eleanor Johnson and Kyleigh Elisabeth Johnson, all of Southlake, Texas. He was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel White Johnson; sisters, Dr. Laura Meredith Johnson and Mary Elisabeth Hudson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, 4205 Kilbourne Road, Columbia, SC 29206.
