Elder Roy L. Mathis was born June 17, 1932 in Hawkinsville, Georgia to the late Otis and Ethel Lee Mathis. He attended Oak Grove Baptist Church also in Hawkinsville, Georgia where he accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized. He moved to Newark, New Jersey in the early 1950's, where he began to work as a factory worker for a few years. He then joined Grace Temple Baptist Church. During that time he met and wed his wife Mary Mathis in the early 1970's. They had six children. Many years later he joined his brother the late Andrew Mathis at Welcome Baptist Church. In 1986 he joined Gospel Deliverance Born Again Church with his brother Rev. Willie Mathis, after the passing of his late brother Rev. Andrew Mathis. Elder Roy hearkened to the voice of the Lord in January 1991 and was ordained as a Minister of the gospel. Elder Roy retired from Truck Driving after 22 years of service in 1997 from Economy Color Card. Elder Roy was preceded in death by one son, Leroy Mathis; one brother, Andrew Mathis; and one sister, Susan Vickers. Elder Roy Mathis is survived by his wife Mary Mathis; his sons, Leonard Mathis, Roy Mathis Jr., Antoine Mathis, Sean Mathis, Willie J. Mathis, Robert Mathis (Beth) and Anthony Mathis; three daughters, Chante Mathis-Brumell (Jason), Kimberly Mathis (Rashon-Fiance) and Sarah Mathis-Fenner (Michael); two brothers, Rev. Willie Mathis (Barbara) and Otis Mathis Jr.; a sister, Lillian Kuntz (Dennis); mother-in-law, Bertha Nixon; four brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
