Mrs. Eleanor Davenport Spires Cox Funeral Home Bastrop, Louisiana Born August 30, 1925, in the family home in Mer Rouge, Eleanor Compton Davenport Spires died peacefully on July 3, 2012. Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Mr and Mrs. C. C. Davenport, and her husband, William V. Spires, Sr. Survived by four sons, Dr. William V. Spires, Jr., of Shreveport, and Dr. Timothy D. Spires and wife Kathleen, John G. Spires and wife Frances, and Dr. Allen L. Spires and wife Lori, all of Mer Rouge; she was lovingly known as "Nor" to grandchildren Eleanor Spires Bergin and husband Jaron, Dr. Timothy D. Spires, Jr., and wife Katharine, Kathleen Larkin Spires, Morgan Spires Hilyer and husband Brandon, Sarah McBride Spires, William Gates Spires, Allen L. Spires, Jr., Samuel Slayden Spires, Leslie McDowell Spires, George Alexander Spires and Joseph Marx Spires; and "Nor-Nor" by her great-grandchildren, Margaret Garner Bergin, Catherine Compton Bergin, Alexander Ryan Spires, Camille Stirling Spires, Ruffin Davenport Spires and Aubrey Mae Hilyer. She also is survived by cousins John Compton, of Baton Rouge, Elizabeth Hertzog, of Nachitoches; and Eleanor Underwood, of Orlando, Florida; sister-in-law, Bettie Spires Tritton, of El Paso, Texas, special friends Frances Coenen, Shelley Coats Jones and many, many others. Eleanor attended school in Mer Rouge, Louisiana, where she graduated in 1942. She attended Louisiana State University during World War II and was an active member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. While volunteering at the local USO chapter in Baton Rouge, she met and soon married a young cowboy-turned-fighter pilot who would be her husband of 62 years, Bill Spires. Airplanes and horses and children and grandchildren, would forever be part of her life. Eleanor was very active in the Episcopal Church, organizing the establishment of two new churches in the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas during the 1950's. She loved the Church and served in almost every capacity on the local and national level. She was a member and regent of the Abram Morehouse Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Between her family duties and activities, Eleanor found time to play and become a master bridge player. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 5, 2012, at 12:00 noon, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Mer Rouge, Louisiana, under the direction of Cox Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m., July 5, 2012, also in the chapel of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, under the direction of Fr. Frank Swindle. Private interment will follow at Mer Rouge Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Dr. Daven Spires, William Morgan Davenport, Alex Rankin, Thomas H. B. Rankin Jr., John Shackelford and Richard Blackwell. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry L. Jones, William Hayden, Dr. John Ziegler, James Tritton, Frank B. Jones, Tommy Burris, Giles Lee and James Blakely. The family would like to extend thanks to the many care givers at Quality Home Health, Morehouse General Hospital and especially The Oak Woods of Mer Rouge Rehabilitation and Wellness for their loving kindness over the past several years. Memorials may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 65, Mer Rouge, Louisiana 71261.
