Elizabeth Fern Allphin Oliphant
July 13, 1939 ~ August 31, 2010

Elizabeth Fern Allphin Oliphant passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.

Elizabeth was born in Laramie, Wyoming to Nylen Lee Allphin and Grace Phyllis Hassell. She was the third of ten children. She graduated from BYU in 1960 in Elementary Education and taught 2nd through 6th grade in the Granite School District for 25 years at Whittier Elementary and Taylorsville Elementary.

She married her eternal sweetheart, Norman Henry Oliphant, on August 14, 1959 in the Salt Lake Temple. After moving around in Utah for the first 11 years of their marriage (Monroe, Provo, Beaver, Roosevelt and Salt Lake City), they settled down and spent most of their life in the Salt Lake Valley: (23 years in Taylorsville and the past 17 years in Cottonwood Heights). They raised ten children, and she served faithfully in many church callings including Primary President, Choir Director, Organist, and Stake Music Chairman.

She sang in the Utah Symphony Chorus with her husband for many years and loved to direct church and school choirs. She taught piano to her children as well as many other students and was an excellent accompanist.

She treasured each of her children, their spouses, her 52 grandchildren, and her 12 great-grandchildren, and shared with them her life-long love of music. Her tender heart and strong spirit live on in their lives as well as in the many lives she blessed as a teacher.

She is preceded in death by her brother, Harold Allphin, her mother, Grace, her father, Nylen, her sister Phyllis Meadows, and her grand-daughter, Leah Maxfield.

She is survived by her spouse, Norman, her ten children: Pauline Longberg, Lynnette (Jeff) Thredgold, Kerry (Julie) Oliphant, Melanie (Randall) Maxfield, Lisa (Julian) Finlinson, Trent (Michele) Oliphant, Travis (Amy) Oliphant, Kendall (Megan) Oliphant, Laura (Janus) Crossett, and Tyler (Erika) Oliphant, her 52 grandchildren: Karen, Kelly, and Eric Longberg; Amy (Drew) Shirts, Chris (Keri) Thredgold, Shawn (Tegan) Thredgold, Michelle (Brett) Peterson, Kacey (Bryce) Barnes, and Taylor Thredgold; Riley, Chase, Charlie, and Matthew Oliphant; Elizabeth, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Ephraim Maxfield; Carlee, Alex, Austin, and Cora Finlinson; Trenton, Moira, Katherine, Jennifer, Christina, Brian, Jamison, David, Jonathan, and Rebecca Oliphant; Amanda, Aubrey, Breanna, Jason, Joshua, and Kaleb Oliphant; Sarah, Peter, Meredith, Andrew, and Benjamin Oliphant; Grace, Anne, Lauren Crossett; Haley, Logan, Hunter, and Carter Oliphant, and her 12 great-grandchildren: Cameron, Ryan, and Matthew Shirts; Kennadie, Adilyn, and Ella Thredgold; Zoee Cherry, Jantson and Jones Thredgold; Lauren and Paige Peterson; and Joshua Barnes.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 4 at 11:00 am with a viewing one hour prior and an additional viewing from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, September 3 in Salt Lake City at the LDS Stake Center at 1830 E 6400 S.

Like branches on a tree we grow in different directions, yet our roots remain as one. We all continue connected.
A poem written for her the night before her death and dedicted to her memory by her son Travis:

Elizabeth

Binding cords of love
thickened by regular life
and congealed by sacrifice
Stretch around the confused,
transient trifles that
tempt attention.

Stirring chords of hope
rippled with a graceful hand
amplified by steadfastness
Reach through the dark and the
sightless surplus of
acts without light

Lasting cords of faith
revealed by conversation
and sealed through eternity
Clutch above the mortal
pallid pastiche to
life without end.
