Elizabeth G. Hilliard, 93, of Annapolis, died peacefully January 22 at Ginger Cove Health Center.
Mrs. Hilliard was born Lizabet Guzowska on October 16, 1918 in Pittsburgh Pa to Polish immigrants, Joseph and Pelagia Guzowski.
She was the top War Bond salesman at Pittsburgh's Oliver Steel Mill in the beginning of World War II. Soon after, she moved to Washington D.C. where she worked on "translating military codes" at Arlington Hall. At the end of the war, she moved to the Veterans Administration where she met her future husband "Jack."
After their marriage she became a homemaker raising four children. When the oldest reached her early teens, Mrs. Hilliard began substitute teaching kindergarten at Holy Trinity Elementary and later worked as a full time teacher, commuting from Crofton.
After retirement she and her husband purchased acreage in the Saint Margarets area where they raised large gardens and various animals from chickens and peacocks to goats and horses for the grandchildren. They also enjoyed foreign travel and visiting family throughout the states. She was committed to her family and religion.
Her husband preceded her in death after 58 years of marriage.
She is survived by two sons, Dale Hilliard of Annapolis and John Hilliard of Richmond Va.; two daughters, Judith Hiniker and Maurine Kostkowski, both of Annapolis; six grandchildren; Christopher Hilliard of Frederick, Benjamin Hilliard of Annapolis, Adam Hilliard of Midland TX, Stephen Kostkowski of Ellicott City, Joseph Kostkowski of Baltimore, and Alexandra Hiniker of Beirut, Lebanon; three great-grandchildren, Addyson Hilliard of Midland TX, Mackenzie Hilliard and Charlie Hilliard of Annapolis.
Visitation will be held 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, January 26 at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, Inc. 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis. A Funeral mass will be held 9 a.m., Friday, January 27 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church,620 N. Bestgate Road, Annapolis followed by interment at Maryland State Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saint Mary's Church, Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, 109 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, MD 21401
