Elizabeth Marie Sumner Allen was born on June 1, 1931 to the late Grover Sumner and the late Hester Alston Sumner. Marie, as she was so lovingly referred to, was born and raised in Roselle, New Jersey. She was a student in the Roselle Public School System where she met her husband, Thomas Allen, Sr. Out of this union, three sons were born, Thomas, Jr., Mark Anthony and Robert Gregory. Marie was retired, after many years of service with the Union County Court System as a pre-trial investigator. She was also a realtor with the Century 21 Ratzman Agency for many years. Following her retirement she worked with the Union County Division of Aging Meals on Wheels program. Marie was a lifelong member of Heard A.M.E. Church in Roselle where she served on the Senior Usher Board, was a member of the Ladies' Guild, a Heard Food Store volunteer and a former Church School teacher. She was a member of the Heard Missionary Society and served as its president until her health began to decline. Marie was named the church's "Mother of the Year" for 2005. Being a woman of great faith, she was positive and always had a kind word to say. Marie loved life, her family and her church. She enjoyed traveling, the holidays (especially Christmas), playing cards, bingo and shopping. Marie brought joy to our lives and, even through her illness, she was a pleasure to be around. On June 7th, the sun set for her. She leaves behind to CELEBRATE her life, her son, Thomas (Suzette); a brother, Cleveland Sumner; seven grandchildren, Michelle, Gerale, Tekki (Tyrone), Tommy (Carletta), Monica, Basir and Kamal; eleven great grandchildren; a special daughter-in-law, Melinda Allen; a niece, Joanette Keyes who was a very dear friend; a sister-in-law, Mary Hightower; a brother-in-law, John Simms and a host of other family members and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Allen, Sr., sons, Mark and Gregory; a brother, William Sumner; and sisters, Thelma Hall, Peacolia Simms and Edna Sumner.
