Ellwood Dale Miller April 25, 1937 September 7, 2011 Ellwood Dale Miller passed away at home on September 7, 2011. Ellwood was born in Albany , OR. He was the elder son of Dale and Fern (Farwell) Miller. His grandfather (Farwell) settled in the Shedd area in the 1850's and farmed on a donation land claim. Ellwood was raised in the Shedd area where his family spent many years farming. He graduated from Shedd High School in 1955. He played the saxophone, was active in the Future Farmers of America and 4-H. He was an integral part of the family's farming activity, basically growing up on the back seat of a tractor. Ellwood graduated from Oregon State University in 1961. After his college ROTC experience he joined the Army and served two years on active duty as a commissioned officer. He did post graduate work at the University of Portland and the Psychoanalytic Institute in Seattle. Ellwood's professional career included working as a 4-H Extension agent, a parole officer for McClaren & Hillcrest schools, and a pilot for the State of Oregon . Post retirement, Ellwood was a volunteer with the 4-H Foundation and served as a trustee on the board. He also served as a board member and president of the Portland Chamber Orchestra Association. He had a wide range of interests including skiing, cycling, hiking, traveling, and flying his Cessna 170. He skied the alps and peddled in Cycle Oregon. Ellwood was a practical man. He enjoyed projects that involved electrical work, machinery, and general problem solving. He was a man of many hats. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dennis. Survivors include wife, Sharon; daughter and son-in-law, Jeri and Ken Houle of Hillsboro, son and daughter-in-law, Greg & Christina Miller of Seattle. Grandchildren include Rob and Kerrie Houle; Natalie and Jacqueline Miller. A memorial service will be held on October 15, 2011 at the Wilhelm's Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 6705 SE 14th Ave. Portland , OR 97202 at 1:00 p m. Reception following the service will be held at the family home in Portland.
