Elmer Buckley

Elmer Buckley, 76, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2009. From 1978 to 1982, Mr. Buckley was a special assistant to Aldo Tatangelo, mayor of Laredo. He helped to organize South Texas Economic Development Office (STEDO) under the Gerald R. Ford Administration to bring economic development to the South Texas area under the Minority Business Development Agency. He was Vice-Chairman of the South Texas Workforce Development Board. He worked in numerous Republican political campaigns for Presidents (Ford, Reagan, Bush 41, Bush 43), governor Bill Clements, and Senators (John G. Tower, Phil Gramm, Kay Hutchinson). He served as Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge BPOE 1068 in 1978. He was the 1997 Marine of the Year recipient for the State of Texas. He served as the State Commandant of the Texas Marine Corps League from 1998 – 2000. Appointed by Mayor Saul Ramirez, he also served on the Laredo Planning and Zoning Commission from 1994 – 2002, and as chair for one year.

Mr. Buckley, a proud marine always, enlisted in the Marine Corps immediately upon graduation from high school and served during the Korean War, receiving the Korean Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Mr. Buckley was preceded in death by his parents, Jobe and Sadie Buckley; his son, Tracy K. Buckley; his brothers James, Joseph, and Thomas; his first wife Barbara; sister-in-law Donna Buckley, and brother-in-law Tom Jacques.

He is survived by his wife, Esther; children: Trina (Nathan); Bratton; James, Catherine, Christopher, Rebecca, George (Stephanie) Buckley, Jennifer Buckley; Thomascyne Ryther, Tara (Terry) McCabe, Thomas Edward Buckley, Tim Buckley and Toni (Lee) Graybill. Grandchildren: Sam and Sean Bratton, Rene Pena, Ricky, Luke and Emma Buckley, and Maximiliano D. Torres from Laredo and numerous other grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother William A. Buckley, and his sisters Geri and Vida and numerous nephews and nieces. He is survived by his brother-in-law Hector (Rebecca) Gonzalez-Arroyo.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 8, 2009, at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels, 1410 Jacaman Rd. from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. A Vigil for the Deceased will be held at 7 in the evening.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church for a Mass at 10:00 a.m. Cortege will depart at 9:30 a.m. from Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels, 1410 Jacaman Rd. Mr. Buckley's ashes will be buried in the Buckley family plot in Maysville, Kentucky, this summer alongside his family he so dearly loved.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Aldo Tatangelo Memorial Scholarship Fund at TAMIU, or the Friends of the Laredo Public Library.
