Elva Jane (Wynne) Grymes, 71, passed away on Wednesday, February, 24, 2010. Born in Matoaca, VA on March 16, 1938, she was the daughter of Bernice (Knowles) and Albert S. Wynne, both deceased. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Albert K. Wynne. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 47 years, Dr. Robert J. Grymes, Jr.; and sons, Dr. Christopher Wynne Grymes of Greenville, NC and his fiancee, Rachel Shapiro, of New York, NY and Dr. James Albert Grymes and his wife, Elizabeth, of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Ann Clossen and her husband, Henry, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Patricia Slade of Norfolk, VA, and Marie Wynne of San Marco, CA; brother-in-law, Roy Grymes of Hampstead, NC; niece, Sandra W. Hurdelbrink, of Richmond, VA; nephew, Dr. A. James Wynne, of Richmond, VA; and several cousins. Elva Jane graduated from Petersburg High School in 1955 and Longwood College in 1959. She earned her Masters of Education degree from The University of Virginia in 1963. During her career, she was a Business teacher and Head of the Business Department at Great Bridge High School and Director of Guidance at Deep Creek Junior High School. In later years, she served as Voting Precinct Captain at Brandon Middle School, Virginia Beach. A strong Christian, she was an active member at Suburban Christian Church in Virginia Beach, where for years she was a member of the Choir and President of the Bellamy Women. She was a member of the Church's Official Board and was on the Church's Seniors Ministry Steering Committee. Elva Jane was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, and friend. She will be greatly missed. The family extends grateful appreciation to the members of Suburban Christian Church and many others for their many kindnesses, including food, cards, and prayers, during her illness. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 26, 2010. A celebration of her life will be held at Suburban Christian Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, with the Rev. C. Todd Haynes officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers will be welcomed, as will donations in her name to the Suburban Christian Church Building Fund. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
