Emily Ponas Obituary


Emily Ponas, age 80, of Taylor, passed away Saturday evening at home. She was preceded in death in 1987 by her beloved husband, Charles Ponas. Born in Taylor on September 15, 1932, daughter of the late Stephen and Emma Schultz Hydeck, Emily was a graduate of the former Taylor High School. She returned to Taylor after traveling with her husband as he served in the U.S. Navy. For twenty five years prior to her retirement, she served as the food service director for the former Bishop O'Hara High School in Dunmore. An active member of St. Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church in Old Forge, she worked various fundraisers including bingo and was a former CCD instructor. A family-oriented woman who adored her son, grandchildren and siblings, she will be forever missed. She is survived by a son, Matthew Ponas and wife Kathy of Taylor; three grandchildren, Charles, Nicholas and Emma Rose Ponas, all of Taylor; a brother, Stephen Hydeck of Pocono Summit; two sisters, Romayne Koerner and Irene Slagan, both of Clarks Summit; and many nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Joseph and Michael Hydeck, also preceded her in death. Her family would like to thank the extraordinary staff of Traditional Home Health Hospice for the care they took of Emily. Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Wednesday at 9:30AM from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with a 10:00AM Divine Liturgy in St. Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Church, 140 Church Street in Old Forge. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday from 5-8:00PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Emily's name to the American Cancer Society, American Cancer Society 712 South Keyser Avenue Taylor, 18517.
