ODUM, Emma Louise, of Centerville, Ohio, died peacefully at Hospice of Dayton on Saturday, August 15, 2009 after a short illness. Daughter of the late Bertha and Arthur L. Odum, Emma Louise graduated from Roosevelt High School, attended the University of Dayton where she graduated with a B.Sc. in Education. She attended Miami University where she received a Master's Degree of Education in Music, French and Social Studies. Emma completed her Residency for a Doctorate of Music Degree in Chamber Music at the College�Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. She spent a summer as a member of the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg, Austria where she also held a Fellowship in Chamber Music with the Quarneri String Quartet at the State University of New York in Binghampton. Early in her career she served as the personal secretary to Miriam Rosenthal, the Executive Secretary of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. She held this position for 16 years. She was Principal Emeritus of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Viola section where she was Principal violist for many years. Emma performed under the batons of all four DPO conductors. She performed with the Dayton Opera Orchestra, the Dayton Bach Society and was the violist in the Dayton Philharmonic String Quintet. Emma taught in the Dayton City Schools, was a Traveling Strings instructor for the Kettering School system and a former Adjunct Professor of Strings and of Music Education at the University of Dayton and Wright State University, respectively. At Wright State University she was also a member of the University Faculty String Quartet. Emma was a long-time member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Oakwood. She loved to travel and her world map in her home denoted all the many places she had visited. Emma will be missed by her many musician colleagues, friends and families, students, and neighbors. A memorial service in her honor will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 3:00PM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Oakwood, with The Rev. Judith A. Dorn officiating. A reception will follow in the cloister. She will be laid to rest in the Woodland Cemetery mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Performance Place at the Schuster Center, 109 N Main St., Ste 200, Dayton, Ohio 45402 or Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave, Dayton, OH 45402.
