Our condolences to the Wolls

Dear Mrs. Woll, Amy and Mark, Chris and Claire, Sarah and Travis,

Will and I are sorry for your loss. Mr. Woll was so full of love for his family - always. And so very proud of his children's gifts, talents and accomplishments.

And, his grandchildren, I know how important they were to him. I remember chatting with him about his first grandchild and the joy he felt for him was immeasurable on his face. My mom recently told me how thrilled he was with the birth of his second.

Stephanie and family, I am so sorry to hear of Eric's passing. I enjoyed knowing him and having neighbors as the both of you. We will remember him fondly and include Eric and your family in our prayers.

Please accept my condolences on the loss of Eric. I worked for Phillips Petroleum and had a business relationship with Eric. I remember him as a man of integrity and a warm, friendly person. I know he will be missed.

Eric was our next door neighbor for a decade. As a result, we had a bird's-eye view of the man we became privileged to know.

Eric was our next door neighbor for a decade. As a result, we had a bird's-eye view of the man we became privileged to know.

Eric was one of the hardest-working people I've ever met in my life. He made me us tired because he never seemed to stop. One of the most amazing things I've ever seen is how Eric managed to transport an enormous hillside quantity of soil and sand one wheelbarrow at a time (with a little help from his beloved Naval Academy Midshipmen). We're talking about 40-50 dump truck loads of Planet Earth down a very steep hill. One by one, he constructed an elaborate network now known as Woll's Walls, to create a beautiful place. Simply amazing . . .

The Eric we knew was a kind and gentle soul. He wasn't a big talker, but when he spoke, you always listened because it was something worth hearing. That wry little grin he had will live with us forever.

Lastly, I thought we had lost Eric during the height of Hurricane Isabel in 2003. Eric had anchored his beloved sailboat out in the South River because he knew that would be the safest place. He always seemed to have a plan.

As the storm intensified after midnight, I was looking out the window and noticed his anchors were slipping and the wind was driving the boat further up-river. Incredulously, I saw a flashlight appear and start bobbing down the hill, and then I saw it it in his dinghy rowing headed out into the river toward his boat. I lost sight of the light, and I tried calling 911, but my phones were out. At about that time, a 200-year old oak tree fell across our properly line destroying my pier, and making it nearly impossible to get down to the shoreline.

Then I saw the light bobbing again, and a completely soaked and exhausted Eric appeared again. That always spoked volumes about how fearless and determined he seemed to be.

We'll miss you, Eric!!!!!

Eric was a good man, a fine friend and excellent sailing companion. We will miss him and always remember the fine sails we had together..
