BURTON---Ernest L. Burton, 91, of Albuquerque went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, October 28, 2009. Ernest was born in Monte Vista, CO to Victor Asa and Gladys Agnes (Coffee) Burton on August 17, 1918. He graduated from Lake View High School in San Angelo, TX. After graduation, he went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad in San Angelo, TX and was later transferred to Clovis, NM with his wife and two sons. During that time he joined the Navy and served two years in World War II on the Columbia stationed in Guam. After the war was over he returned to Clovis, later transferred to Wellington, KS at which time he joined the Masonic Lodge. In 1957, Ernest took a job as tool and die maker with General Electric. He was instrumental in machining parts for the Apollo 7 space craft and also nuclear aircraft engines. In 1968, General Electric transferred him to Albuquerque where he worked until retirement. Ernest was very active in the Crestview Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school and served as a Deacon for 39 years. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mattie Louise (Young) Burton; children, Larry and wife, Kay, Jerry and wife, Laura; and Dana and wife, Dori; 10 grandchildren, Julie, Jeff, Laura, Travis, Debbie, Carson, James, Elisabeth, Briana and Siera; and 10 great-grandchildren, Shay, Michael, Amanda, Courtney, Justin, Catherine, Anna, Heather, Jesse, Christian. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Anita (Burton) Wilson. Services will be held Monday, November 2, 2009, 1:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Lomas Chapel. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Sunday, November 1, 2009, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
