Cobleskill- Esther A. Bond, born November 20, 1928 in Hanover, N.H., died peacefully at home March 18, 2010 with her husband, Donald, daughter and granddaughter by her side. She is survived by her husband, Donald, her daughter Debra (Bruce) Wollaber of Nashville, TN and Summit, NY, four grandchildren: Allan (Carrie) Wollaber of Oak Park, Il., Diane (Rajan) Chudgar of Round Rock, Tx., Lori (Shawn) Roberts and Lynn (Lenny) Bacon both of Sedalia, Mo. and 8 great-grandchildren. Don and Esther had looked forward to celebrating their 60th anniversary in July by touring Howe Caverns as they did on their honeymoon and welcoming a new great-grandson in June.
Her parents Wm.Benton Adams and Hattie Wilkie Adams, her brother, Richard, and her daughters Linda (1958) and Sharon (2005) predeceased her.
A native of Etna, NH, Esther attended schools in New Hampshire and graduated from Hanover High in 1946. She worked with her father with Morgan horses and with English Setters. Active in school activities and sports, she met her husband in 10th grade, dated him through high school, his 2 years in the U.S. Navy, a year of prep school and first year of college, then married July 7, 1950 in Etna NH. Don and Esther’s first two daughters were born as Don finished college; they moved to Dolgeville, NY where she gave birth to a third daughter and began her career as an executive secretary at Daniel Green Slipper Company.
Upon moving to Cobleskill in 1964 she worked as the secretary to the Department Chair of the Agricultural Division at SUNY Cobleskill until her retirement. Esther enjoyed her retirement years by traveling with Don in their motor home for 25 years, crossing the U.S. three times, enjoying visits to her daughters’ families in Montana and Tennessee. A “Snowbird”, they traveled to Florida for the winter, staying in 85 different campgrounds in Florida.
Don and Esther have been members of the Cobleskill Golf and Country club for over 30 years, taking part in league tournaments and Intercounty competitions. Esther was able to play golf in 29 states in 112 different golf courses. Her passions for grandchildren, golf, embroidery, bridge, Bingo and visiting casinos all over the country made her life exciting and enjoyable. In the late 1970’s, the relationships she developed with the friends of Bill W. helped her through her problem and established more life-long friendships. She was a member of Cobleskill United Methodist Church for 46 years.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill with Rev. Pam Mikel Hayes of the Cobleskill United Methodist Church officiating. Friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held at the funeral home from 6 to 8 PM on Saturday. Inurnment will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery, Hillview Section at 9:30 AM on Wednesday, June 3, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 795 East Main Street, Suite 11, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043 or to the Cobleskill United Methodist Church, 109 Chapel Street, Cobleskill, NY 12043.
