Esther Estefania "Cuca" (Curi) Aucar, passed away Monday, September 26, 2011, at her home in Leawood, Kansas. Memorial Mass will be offered on Thursday at 10:00 a.m., September 29, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 14231 Nall Avenue, Leawood, Kansas 66224. Interment will take place at Miami Memorial Park on October 8 following a private service at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn Funeral home in Miami, Florida. Esther will be interred next to her husband of 49 years, Dr. Alfredo Aucar. A Memorial Mass is being planned in Arkansas City for Dr. Alfredo and Esther, information will be published as the event approaches. Esther was born on January 16, 1921 in Pinar del Rio province, Cuba, to Angela Dow Curi and Manuel Curi. She was one of five children. She was raised in Havana, Cuba where she lived until she met and married Alfredo Aucar. Soon thereafter they moved to Fall River, Massachusetts while Alfredo completed his residency program. After returning to Cuba for a few years the sought political refuge back in the United States. Most of her years in the United States were spent in Arkansas City, from 1969 until 1999. Finally, they retired to Miami Beach to be near family. They lived there together for three years before Esther moved to Leawood, Kansas to be with her daughter after the death of her husband. While living in Arkansas City, Esther was a member of Sacred Heart Church and served on the Altar Guild, the Ladies Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital, Christian Women's Club and the Welcome Wagon. Her favorite hobby was sewing. Esther was devoted to her family and friends and will be remembered for her kindness and courage. She is survived by her three children and their families, including seven grandchildren, Alfred and Sharon Aucar (Alex & Allison) of Bradenton, Florida, Maria and Bill Koch (Stephanie, William & Marlene) of Leawood, Kansas, John and Julie Aucar (Erin & Adam) of Tyler, Texas; a brother, Gerardo Curi and niece, Maritza Curi of Las Vegas, Nevada; as well as a cousin, Celina Garcia and Ron Watson (Christopher, Edward & Kali) of Wichita, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Kansas City or your local chapter. Condolences may be offered at www.mtmoriah-freeman.com.
