Eugene A. Donati, 88, of Hooksett, NH, died October 30, 2009 at Catholic Medical Center. He was born June 2, 1921, in Manchester, the son of Donato and Ottavia (Gianinni) Donati. He grew up attending school in Manchester and had attended Hesser Business College. At the age of 17 he opened the Donati Accordion School in Manchester where he taught many students. Eugene was a member of the Donati Family Accordian Quintet who played regionally but were known nationally as accomplished accordionists. The Quintet was recently honored in a John Clayton Feature article as well as at a National Accordian Convention. He was an active member of the Hooksett community and helped build the South Hooksett Fire Department where he served as a volunteer firefighter. Mr. Donati was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Parish where he was a member of the building committee. On August 11, 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in World War II with the 26th. Field Hospital where he was part of the Persian Gulf Command. He had been stationed in Persia (Iran), France and Germany until his discharge on December 2, 1945. For his service in the Persian Gulf Command he was honored with a "Victory Over Germany" medal from the Russian Government in 1995. He was best known however for entertaining the troops and patients with his accordian playing. Upon returning from the war he worked for the family business, D. Donati & Sons until his retirement. On June 6, 1959 he married the love of his life, Olivette Anita Letendre and they were happily married for 40 years until her death, November 24, 1999. He was also predeceased by a brother Dante in 1984 and a brother Arthur in 1966. Out of all his accomplishments he was most proud of his family, which includes his daughter, Diane A. Donati of Belmont, MA, two sons, Dean E. Donati and his wife Cara, of Hooksett and Rev. David A. Donati and his wife Kimberly, of Hooksett, grandchildren, Jennifer, Carissa, Matthew, Stephen, Nicholas, Maxim and Alexa, great grandson Jacob, sister; Eleanor Donati, brothers Joseph and Anthony Donati, all of Hooksett, many nieces and nephews. He was known and loved as "Nonu" not only by his grandchildren, but by all who met him. His gentle manner and good humor endeared him to all who knew him. Sadly another of the "Great Generation" has left us. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 P.M. in Goodwin Funeral Home 607 Chestnut Street, corner of Harrison Street, Manchester. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated Thursday, 10 A.M. at St. Catherine of Siena Parish corner of Webster & Hemlock Streets, Fr. Paul Montminy will be celebrant. Committal prayers followed by military honors will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford. Memorial contributions may be sent to Visiting Nurse Assn., 33 South Commercial Street, Suite 401, Manchester, NH 03101 or Catholic Charities 235 Myrtle Street, Manchester, NH 03104.
