Mr. Eugene Anthony Sonneville

I moved onto the cul-de-sac in 2002. During the past 9 years as his neighbor, I have been blessed by his watchful eye (he never missed a trick) and I always felt like he was the neighborhood watch captain. I slept better knowing Gene was there. He was also my 'go to Mr. Fix-it Man!' He helped Arlinda fix our main gas line in the front yard, came to my aid when I had broken a pipe & was flooding the yard, and most recently, welded a new faucet for me. Thank goodness he has passed the fix-it gene onto his son Warren, who fixed our outdoor lighting problem and truly came to my rescue last month fixing our furnace! By knowing Gene I learned that curmudgeons can be loveable! I will miss him dearly.

I knew Gene as a delightful youth in our hometown of Moline. We were next-door neighbors. His father, Louie, was my first cousin and someone whose company I very much enjoyed.

Louie was a ham radio amateur. His radio equipment was located on the second floor of his house. Gene had his bedroom on the second floor.

One evening, while I was visiting with Louie while he was operating his ham equipment, a very young Gene (perhaps 3 years old), walking in his sleep (or at best half awake, entered the radio room and was about to urinate on the radio transmitter rack. Louie shouted NO!, grabbed the child, and may have saved not only his equipment but the life of Gene.

The incident barely awakened the boy. He led a very calm childhood.
