EUGENE (GENE) WHITT, 82 years old, of Manassas, Virginia passed away at home on January 21, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.
Gene was born May 2, 1930 in Buchanan County, Virginia. At the age of 14, he started working for his Uncle Fleming on his farm. He worked in the coal mines for six months and then worked for the John Rowe Lumber Yard before moving to Prince William County in 1949 - he was glad to get out of the mountains so he could find work other than the coal mines. He worked at Potomac Yards in Alexandria, Virginia, then for Robert Taylor in his saw mill and operated the well drilling machine for many years. Then he went to work at VDOT in July 1959 as a mechanic where he retired in July 1991 after 32 years of dedicated service. Since he retired, he has enjoyed being an active member of Victory Gospel Church, Manassas where he served as a deacon. He also has enjoyed playing his guitar and going to the Senior Center in Woodbridge, Virginia where he taught others to play pool. He also enjoyed talking about the good ole days with family and friends. He has been playing gospel music for over 30 years, visiting nursing homes and other churches. He even played music to the inmates at the Virginia State Penitentiary in Richmond, Virginia.
Gene was predeceased in death by five brothers, Clyde, Aldon, Garlon, Noah and Raymond Whitt and three sisters, Loney Johnson, Avinell Keen and Celie Whitt.
Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Juanita Anne McIntosh Whitt; three sons, Donald E. Whitt (Alyene) of Covington, Virginia, Daryl Whitt (Sue) of Warrenton, Virginia and Christopher E. Whitt (Kristina) of Woodbridge, Virginia; three daughters, Sandra K.
