COLUMBIA - Service for Evelyn Hedgepath Sharpe, 86, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Visitation will be from 10 until 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Sharpe, wife of the late Howard O'Deal Sharpe, Sr., died Sunday, December 25, 2011. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Herbert G. and Louise Mallard Hedgepath. She graduated from Columbia High School and the School of Nursing, Medical College of South Carolina (now MUSC). She was a life member of the Alumni Association and was inducted into the Golden Grads in 1998.
Evelyn was retired from the VA Hospital with her last employment being with Dr. E.R. Taylor. She was a member of Shandon Presbyterian Church, active in the Women of the Church and a church volunteer for many years. She also was a long time Meals on Wheels volunteer and was a former member of Lykesland Tuesday Afternoon Book Club.
Evelyn was a lifelong resident of Columbia until moving to Laurel Crest Retirement Center in 1994. While living at Laurel Crest, she served on many committees and was instrumental in establishing the Resident's Memory Garden.
Surviving are her sons, Howard O. Sharpe, Jr. (Donna) of Denver, CO and Chip Sharpe (Nancy Richeson) of Columbia; brother, Milton Hedgepath (Janelle) of Lake Murray; brother-in-law, Mel Collins of Chapin; six grandchildren, Bryan Sharpe, Dustin Sharpe (Angela) and Christine Sharpe, all of Denver; Elizabeth Butler (Michael) of Saluda, Marion Sharpe (Ashley) of Lexington and Frank Sharpe of Greensboro, NC; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Collins, and a brother, Herbert Hedgepath.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harvest Hope Food Bank, P.O. Box 451, Columbia, SC 29202; State Library, Books on Tape Division; or to a charity of one's choice.
